What the Future Holds: 1/1
Rating: G
Classification: Post ep, Mulder POV, possible mild UST...but then again, possibly not
Summary: A short post-ep for Closure, where I try to give a little *more* closure
Spoilers: Closure & Field Trip. The movie is also referenced, but not spoiled.
Disclaimer: (Most people try to have fun with this, but personally I just skip it when I'm looking at other sites, so...) The X-Files and everything else related to it belong to Chris Carter, Fox, 1013, David, Gillian, various others, and the BIG BAD WOLVES...um lawyers! I don't own them, I just borrow them for a while, but I'll try to return them in better shape then I got 'em:>) But if I did own them, not only would I be richer than I deserve to be, this UST mumbo-jumbo would be a bad memory!
Feedback: Yes please. I'll beg if necessary:)
What the Future Holds
What do you do the day after you held a seance, conversed with your dead mother, and hugged a ghostsister that you previously thought was flying around in the cosmos with little gray men-thus experiencing closure that you'd been searching your entire life for? What do you do? Well, you do paperwork. Paperwork, paperwork and more paperwork. I was in the middle of doing said paperwork when my partner, equally busy with useless grunt work, turned to me.
"Mulder, let's get out of here," she said as she popped her back.
"Scully, I'm busy," I replied oh so sensibly.
She just rolled her eyes and walked to the door. "Come on Mulder. Get your coat. We're going to lunch early today."Did I ever mention that I enjoyed paperwork more than my partner's company? Of course not. So I got my coat and followed her down the hall.
"Where are we going?" I asked as we left the Hoover Building and turned right.
"Mm. We'll know when we get there. Just enjoy the fresh air Mulder." Scully said mysteriously.
So I took deep breaths to enjoy the fresh air, and followed where Scully led. We ended up at the reflecting pool. Our usual bench wasn't taken so we sat.
We sat in silence for a while, both of us staring straight ahead. Finally Scully leaned forward, with her elbows on her knees, and spoke.
"Mulder, what next?"
"What?"
"I mean what do we do now? Do we just continue with the X-Files forever?"
I was silent for a second while I thought about her question. I seriously hadn't thought of the future yet, but it was a good question. I had found Samantha...now what?
"You told me your place was here with me now-." I began, but Scully cut me off.
"I'm not saying I want to leave you. I'm just curious how long this is going to last."
"You're sure you don't want to be a doctor?"
Scully glanced at me for a moment. "Do you want me to?" I shook my head vehemently. "Then no, I don't."
"Why?" I asked the question that I've feared the answer to forever.
She took a deep breath and looked me in the eyes. Scully was silent for several moments, while my heart thudded painfully away, and then she spoke in a rush, "You should have warned me the first day Mulder. You should have told me how exciting this job would be. Because once you've experienced the kinds of things we have, there's not really any going back. How could I be happy with being a doctor after this, where the most exciting thing I see in a day is an athlete's foot fungus? After being practically digested by one Mulder? It's just not possible!"
I mulled over her answer for a while before I realized that I couldn't really have asked for a better one. Just then I knew my answer. I stood and held out my hand to her, "What are we going to do now Scully?" She took my hand and I pulled her up. I dropped my voice to a whisper and with a smile on my face told her, "Now we're going to do it for fun."
